Backrooms, a 2019 4chan post, is a popular online horror notion. The proposal depicts an unending sequence of empty, labyrinthine chambers with yellowed, wet carpeting, buzzing fluorescent lights, and repetitive wallpaper, creating a bizarre and unsettling sense of loneliness. The idea is that one may “noclip” (a phrase from video games, meaning to slip through walls or obstacles) out of reality and into the Backrooms, an other universe with unnerving “levels” where escape is difficult or impossible.
